GTA 6 Console Shortage Warning: Why You Should Buy a PS5 or Xbox Before November

If you’re planning to upgrade your console for GTA 6, retailers are issuing a clear warning: don’t wait until November. A combination of hardware shortages, rising prices, and demand for the biggest game launch in years is creating conditions that could leave late buyers without a console at all, or paying significantly more for one.

The Warning From Retailers

A senior games buyer, speaking anonymously to The Game Business, was direct: “Because of the ongoing issues around hardware component availability, we won’t be getting the units we want ahead of GTA. Demand will likely outstrip supply during the year-end period.”

Xbox CSO Matthew Ball separately confirmed to The Game Business that demand is already outpacing supply for Xbox Series consoles: “We are putting them in as many stores as possible. We are producing them as quickly as possible. There is a severe limitation to how quickly we can do that.”

Sony’s CEO Hiroki Totoki told investors in May that the “necessary volume” for the year had been secured, but that statement predates the GTA 6 pre-order announcement and the demand surge it revealed.

Why GTA 6 Creates a Different Kind of Pressure

GTA 6 is current-gen only. PS4 and Xbox One cannot run it, no exceptions. That creates an upgrade pressure that doesn’t exist for most releases. Millions of players who stuck with last-gen hardware, casual gamers, households with one console, people waiting for a reason to upgrade, are all being given that reason at the same moment.

Analyst Joost Van Dreunen explained it this way: “Precisely because gaming hardware has become largely unaffordable for consumers, the existing player base will eagerly spend on those experiences they know will be worth their time. Why spend $1,000 on a new console when you can spend only a fraction on one of the best franchises around?”

Prices Are Rising and Will Rise Again

The PS5 saw a price increase earlier in 2026. Xbox Series X was raised in October 2025 and has another confirmed price hike coming in August 2026. Valve recently confirmed it does not expect component costs to fall. Every week you wait is a week closer to the next increase.

Which Console Should You Buy for GTA 6?

PS5 is the straightforward recommendation if you are buying specifically for GTA 6. Sony has a marketing deal with Rockstar, PS5 Pro optimisations are confirmed, and the larger PS5 install base means a bigger online ecosystem at launch.

Xbox Series X runs the same game at the same quality. If you are already in the Xbox ecosystem through Game Pass or an existing library, there is no reason to switch.

Xbox Series S is the open question. GTA 6’s file size and rendering demands are substantial, and the Series S has a weaker GPU than the other current-gen options. No performance data exists yet. If the Series S is your only option, wait for post-launch technical analysis before buying one specifically for GTA 6.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
